Do you know that most people are suffering from cognitive disorder, without knowing?
What is a cognitive disorder?
The term cognitive functions refers to functions that deal with processing information. Functions such as perception, attention, concentration, memory, orientation, language use and skills. Disturbances in one or more of the cognitive functions can lead to problems in daily life. You can think of: forgetfulness, forgetting what day it is or not being able to find words, not being able to solve problems, disruption of the day and night rhythm, getting lost, no longer taking care of oneself and the household and apathy.
These problems can have various causes
- Risk groups
- People with dementia, depression or delirium;
- People who have had a stroke;
- People with high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease;
- People with multiple physical illnesses;
- People who take more than four different medications (polypharmacy).
- Prevention
- A healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of dementia. Treating blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke.
Therapy
The treatment is aimed at the cause of the cognitive disorders. In dementia, treatment is aimed at slowing the decline. Discussions and medications are often used for depression. Delirium is generally easy to treat.
